We offer the largest team of international tutors of any makeup school.
At AOFM our teaching ethos sets us apart from the rest, being the first to be opened and operated completely and only by working freelance makeup artists. What makes us unique from other schools is our tutors are freelance makeup artists, coming into the academy to teach our students as guest lecturers. This means your tutor has come directly from applying makeup or styling the hair for top magazine covers and editorials, famous celebrities & designers and the world’s premier Fashion Weeks, bringing with them current, up-to-date skills and techniques. You can’t get more insider industry knowledge than that.
Most other schools offer students a full time teacher with maybe one or two guest teachers coming in over the duration of the hair and makeup courses. This means the student only gets one perspective of teaching. At AOFM our teachers come from all sectors of the industry and with more than 40 makeup artists making up the AOFM team you will be spoilt for choice as you will have an array of individual skills to learn from.
Our students are taught by a different teacher every day, no one class is the same and you are offered a wider breadth of skills and techniques for each makeup module. This gives our students more makeup application insight, tips, tricks and industry know-how than you can get anywhere else.
Jana Ririnui created and founded the Academy of Freelance Makeup nearly a decade ago. Although already an accomplished makeup artist, he also occasionally taught at makeup schools in London, seeing first-hand a lack of transparency and real industry advice in such training. This spurred him on to approach his closest artist friends to create the first industry-based makeup school entirely run by the top working freelance makeup artists. It was important to him and his colleagues that students understood the real world of working as a makeup artist and are given a no-nonsense, honest approach to teaching the makeup artists of the future. He realised many schools promised a world of bright lights and fame without teaching them how to get to the top of the industry ladder. To this day Jana hand-picks the best in the business, inviting them into the Academy to teach students everything they need to know to prepare them for success.
Jana has since taken this unique ethos of solid, impartial and honest advice and true industry knowledge even further, supporting his graduates out of the four walls of the classroom and placing them all over the world to work backstage at the biggest international Fashion Weeks and industry events as well as to assist AOFM’s artists on top magazines and the world’s most famous celebs.
Jana’s untiring commitment to AOFM graduates continues to push the boundaries of makeup education to this day, making AOFM one of the most renowned and respected makeup schools in the world in the process.

While in secondary school I fell in love with makeup – I felt like being able to express myself through the art of makeup gave me the confidence I needed during that time. Although studying business studies at college, I soon found as a creative that wasn’t the path for me. I made the decision to stay true to my passion to fully commit to my aspirations of becoming a makeup artist. I later enrolled in makeup at a beauty college in London and never looked back. At the start of 2019 I made my television debut on the first season of BBC’s Glow Up: finding Britain’s next best makeup artist. Later on that same year I went on to become the makeup artist on the BBC show Misfits Salon.
At the age of 20, I worked on my first magazine: Marie Claire. Since then my work’s been featured in Paper magazine, Harper’s Bazaar on the front cover of Notion magazine, Hunger magazine and more. If I’m not working on a shoot, it’ll be a music video. My style of work is not limited – from glam, editorial to SFX makeup.
In my time so far I’ve been able to travel up and down the country with some of the biggest black artists in the UK. Being the key makeup artist to pop star Bree Runway and also working with names in the music and fashion industry such as Leomie Anderson, Nadia Rose, Lancey Fouxx, Stormzy, AJ Tracey and Headie One.

Club-kid turned makeup artist, creating through the fantastical and experimental ways makeup can be used. My take on makeup is that it should be brave; should push the creative boundaries and be something unique to you and your imagination. This means I’ve had many opportunities to give my own perspective stamp on music videos, performances and concerts where individuality is key. The shoots I create for also require their creative narrative; it needs to speak without words. Being able to fine tune the creativity for different projects is a matter of ‘volume’. My makeup ‘loudness’ plays well for artistic projects with big creative briefs where I can build the character from head to toe. For the quieter briefs I still play with whimsy for things such as catwalk or more minimal editorials. Wherever my brush is required I aim to paint the normal into the unusual.

Dani Fonseca, a native to the lively city of New York, can usually be found expressing her artistic visions, ideas and stories on and through the human form. Starting her company The Body of Art in 2005, she is one of the most sought after body painters in the tri-state area, commonly hired to create installation for events, videos, and private clientele. Her most commonly known creation was the skeleton look on Lady Gaga’s face in her self-expressed anthem “Born This Way”. Dani’s lifetime work is constantly examining and challenging the often-misperceived boundaries of authentic expression. Although her medium has quite often been body painting, makeup, props and installation, there is no one medium that captures her exploration and exposition of this visceral, powerful vulnerability.
