Overview
The Academy of Freelance Make Up is at the forefront of training successful world-famous fashion, photographic and wedding make up artists. We are unlike other hair and make up schools which don’t offer up-to-date teachers. At AOFM we offer training from some of the best international freelance hair and make up artists in the business. These artists currently work with the biggest fashion designers such as Versace, Armani and Prada. They also work on catwalk shows, TV shows, fashion magazines and with celebrities. As a result these artists are able to give you the most up-to-date teaching available.
AOFM offer one, two or three-week highly intensive hair and make up courses. We also offer a selection of master classes with M.A.C Pro cosmetics as well as Fashion Week master classes in London and Paris. All of these courses are with top working freelance make up and hair stylists. Other make up schools offer only one teacher over a duration of a course giving you only one person’s opinion on how to apply make up. We teach using a different guest hair and make up artist every day, enabling you to experience their many skills and ways of applying the art of make up and hair styling, giving you a more unique and personal way to learn. We are the only UK make up and hair styling school whose hair and make up courses are sponsored and supported by Babyliss PRO, Bobbi Brown cosmetics, Dermalogica, Shu Uemura, Becca, KMS, St Tropez and Glamour magazine. AOFM is also the only UK make up school to send students on jobs and work experience during and after make up courses with clients such as designers at London Fashion Week, Clothes Show Live, Christian Dior and magazines like Vogue.
As a make up artist it is crucial to understand the tools of the trade. This is why the Academy offers you the opportunity when training with us to learn and work with over 30 of the most professional brands, including MAC, Christian Dior, Lancôme, and Giorgio Armani to name a few.
At AOFM all our courses are kept small with one tutor and up to two assistants. This ensures you receive the highest level of attention and one-to-one training. As one of the UK's leading make up artist schools our range of make up courses run 6 days a week Monday to Saturday, giving you more time to learn and develop your skills.
Our tutors are some of the finest international freelance hair and make up artists in the industry. Since we all had to start somewhere, we understand how expensive it can be to start in this industry. This is why the Academy gives you a variety of kit discount and resource options, letting you choose what suits you best.
We also give you the chance to explore your creativity and flair with a fantastic photo shoot with a top fashion photographer.
Personal One-to-One Attention
Our class sizes are kept small to maximize learning. We offer not only a great tutor, but an additional assistant tutor in every class. The Truth
If you are looking for a make up school consider the following points when looking for a course.
The truth is the make up industry is hard and very competitive. There are many schools claiming to promise the world. It’s really up to you, not any school, to give you a successful career as a working make up artist.
No school can promise every student success - not even us!
There are a few things you need to look for when searching for a good professional make up school. Many make up schools claim to offer working make up artists. If you come across this then ask to see their teacher’s current portfolios. If they can’t supply one then it is doubtful they are current working fashion make up artists. If they do supply one then look at them closely - if they are not credited in a magazine or of magazine quality then they are not really top working make up artists. It’s no guarantee that schools with great pictures on their site use good, current working make up teachers. Ask who will be teaching you and then do your research on the teacher via Google etc.
Look at who supports the school - this can be big named cosmetic brands and hair companies. Any good school will be affiliated and working with big name companies. This shows their industry respected and that they are connectioned by big name companies.
If you are looking at schools claiming to offer international certificates and they say this will ensure you will get work after, be wary as there is no such thing as a fully qualified make up artist. A certificate alone will not guarantee work.
There is no recognised international make up association or qualification. The only association recognised by the leading UK schools is NASMAH (the National Association of Screen Make up and Hair - www.Nasmah.co.uk).
The make up artist industry is not regulated by any international awarding body and by having a currently offered qualification never ensures you will get work. In the make up artist industry you are only judged in fashion on your portfolio (photographic proof of your work) or in TV and film a show reel and of course your personality. The truth is that if you have the creative flair and a willingness to learn you can do this by assisting a make up artist and without any qualification. Schools are there only to fast track knowledge and understanding of the industry - they don’t qualify you to work. There are a number of top make up artists in the industry doing magazines like Vogue and TV and feature films who have never done any make up training who are now big make up artists.
Find out what cosmetic brands the school offers you to work with during your training. If a school only offers one brand you will be stuck in the industry as no make up artist will ever use just one brand. Your training should give you an understanding of all the products a professional would use. Be careful of schools that offer kits as in many cases they are not professional products and you can be in a situation that the products you use you will not enjoy using or they may hold you back as once you finish training you don’t have the product knowledge of any other brands. If they claim to offer a selection of all the top brands ask to see them all.
What does the school offer after you have trained?
Student testimonials mean nothing when looking for a school - they can be manipulated by the school and if they are giving after care to their students ask for proof of this. Ask for images of students working backstage or maybe videos to prove it.
What past student work does the school show you?
If you want to get in to fashion, beauty, bridal or magazines then look at the school’s student photographic day images. If they are not on their website ask to see them. If they are not what you would find in a fashion magazine you have at home then they are not giving you the quality shoot or experience you deserve and this will not get you work after.
These are all great questions to help as pointers to finding a good training ground. Ask us and any other school for all of these to prove good quality training. As a student you are paying a lot of money for your training - you deserve to get the best teachers, products to work with and after care money can buy.
We believe in raising the standards of training offered in the industry and if you are going to part with your money ask as many questions as possible to avoid disappointment
